About the treatment
How it works
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a material that has been used in medicine for many years. Once injected, it is gradually absorbed, and as that happens it prompts the skin to rebuild collagen in the treated area.
Because the change comes from your own collagen, it appears slowly and looks natural. It suits people who have lost volume across the face generally and would like to restore it without an obvious before and after.
Your appointment
What happens, step by step
Consultation
We talk through your concerns and medical history, examine the area and explain your options, the cost and the risks. You can take time to think it over.
Preparation
On the day we confirm your consent, take photographs for your record, and cleanse the skin.
Treatment
The product is placed deep beneath the skin at several points across the treatment area. The area is then massaged to spread it evenly.
Afterwards
You leave with written aftercare advice and our number. We check how you have settled at a review if one is needed.
Before
Preparing for your appointment
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
- Tell us about any medication or supplements you take, including blood thinners. Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking to your GP
- Let us know if you are unwell, have a skin infection or a cold sore in the area, as we may need to rebook
- Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as treatment is not carried out during this time
- Come with clean skin and no make-up on the area if you can
After
Looking after yourself afterwards
- Massage the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days, as shown at your appointment
- Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas for 24 hours
- Use a cool compress for any swelling
- Keep your follow-up sessions, as the result depends on completing the course
- Call us if you notice any lumps, increasing pain or anything that worries you

Frequently asked
How is Sculptra different from filler?
Filler adds volume immediately. Sculptra works more slowly by stimulating collagen, so the change is gradual and subtle.
When will I see results?
Usually from around six weeks, continuing to improve over several months as collagen builds.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people need two or three sessions. We will give you a clear estimate at consultation.
Is there downtime?
Very little. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur. You will be shown how to massage the area for a few days afterwards.
How often is maintenance needed?
Typically every 12 to 24 months.
